Frame & Bike Production Updates

Lot's of updates today folks. It's a mix of good news and not to good news. Here are the details.  We'll do our best to answer questions.    Question about other models will be gathered and saved for a different blog post.

We are in production of complete bikes in our Minnesota facility. Bikes have started shipping to our authorized dealers. Our first shipment of bikes went to Alaska.  ALL of this first production is going to Salsa Authorized Dealers. We will be shipping complete through mid December to our Salsa Authorized Dealers that had them prebooked early.  Again, if you want a bike from the first bike production, please contact one of our dealers as this will likely be the only way to get one from this first production.

Mukuluk is available as a frameset as well. Framesets are in transit.  Most of the first shipment is also prebooked.  Again, if you want one, please contact one of our Salsa Authorized Dealers. Frames will start shipping in limited quantities to our dealers in early December. Look for a detailed blog post coming soon about building a Mukluk up from a frame kit.

Our pilot production run is complete and we are in production of the framesets. While we had hoped to have them available to ship in 2010, it does look as though these will arrive in January 2011. We have frames scheduled to arrive for both frame sale and bike production in our Minnesota facility. All of this first Spearfish shipment is also pre sold to Authorized Dealers. If you are looking to purchase one of these fine framesets or bikes, please contact one of our Salsa Authorized Dealers. It is the only way you will be able to get one of these from the first production.

The new Casseroll is in production as you can see from the pics above. These will be available starting mid to late January 2011. Bikes & frame kits will be available. Bikes will be made available to our Authorized Dealers first. We also will have frame kits available to non stocking dealers as well. Frame kits include frame, fork & front rack.

The new steel Fargo is in production as well. These will be available starting mid to late January 2011. Bikes & Frames will be available to both Authorized Dealers and to non stocking dealers. Not all of these are presold to our Authorized Dealer base at this time. We will of course ship our dealer orders first, but we will have frames and bikes available for non stocking dealers.

Wow....That is a lot of updates which I am certain will spark a bunch of questions. We'll do our best to answer questions.

Growing up as a Minnesota farm boy, I developed an appreciation and love for land and open space. This appreciation has fostered two passions, cycling and photography. Both of these passions provide freedom, encourage me to explore and foster creativity. More importantly though, my journey with a bike and a camera reminds me that the world is big and I am small.

Can you elaborate on how Mukluks are being allocated? It’s kind of obvious why Alaska got the first run, as the season there is already started, but how about the lower 48? Are you shipping to dealers by geography? Rationing and shipping partial orders to all dealers? By the dates the dealers ordered? If i could get my head around sooner vs. later, I could stop bugging my shop every day :-)

Gnat | November 22nd, 2010

Tim, thanks for the note and the excitement

At this time, the best methodology is to ask your Authorized Salsa dealer to call Salsa sales or speak with their outside sales representative for support.  This will give them the best info.

Vaya Ti’s?

ru-tang | November 22nd, 2010

Any word on another batch of big mamas going to be made?

Francisco | November 22nd, 2010

How about the racks? My Vaya looks awefully naked!

Gnat | November 22nd, 2010

Titanium - We will do a future blog post on ti production and delivery.

Ru-Tang - No more Big Mama’s.  We are working on a new one.  When?  Don’t have an answer right now.  Sorry.

Francisco - Racks?  We posted on this recently, but here is the short version.  Wanderlust rear racks early December.  Mimimalist universal rack - Around Christmas or just after the new year.  Down Under lo rider front rack - Mid January.

Andrew | November 22nd, 2010

What about matching rigid forks for the El Mariachi’s?  Do you expect them soon?  Also, will the paint match up well because any fork bought now will come from a newer production run?

jp | November 22nd, 2010

Can I wait until 2011 for a new Cassie?!  Por favor, crown the fork :)

trailriderjim | November 22nd, 2010

Thanks for the Mukluk updates. I can only imagine the buzz on the assembly floor.  Keep up the good work , and yes, I do look forward to that first ride.  Gordo

Zack | November 22nd, 2010

While you have the crystal ball lit up, can you tell if the suspension-corrected, anything cage-optimized 2011 Fargo fork will be available separately? I have just the bike for one of those. Thanks.

Allen Beauchamp | November 23rd, 2010

Oh my…I can hear my Mukluk calling my name :-)

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Gnat | November 23rd, 2010

@Andrew - I don’t have a current arrival date for the painted to match forks.  Due to the color, the color match is much easier than some of our other colors.  I suspect it will be VERY close.

@ JP - You are a true salsa supporter and one of our most dedicated Salsa Casseroll and road fans.  Thank you.  Unfortunately, no crown fork.  Sorry.

@Zack - Yes, we will be offering the new 2011 suspension corrected Fargo fork for 2011.  I suspect these will arrive shortly after the arrival of the new 2011 Fargos.

Ken Herman | November 23rd, 2010

Great to hear about the updates!  Have a 2011 Fargo on order.  Really looking forward to it.  Have some fun trips planned for it…

Quick question, about how long should it take for Salsa support to respond to an email.  I emailed last week about getting S&S couplers on the new frame and haven’t gotten a response back.

Gnat | November 23rd, 2010

Ken - Not sure I understand.  We do not produce a Fargo with S & S couplers nor do we do custom frames.

Tom | November 23rd, 2010

Well, it would be great if you did either a Fargo or Vaya with S&S couplers. I am thinking of putting them on the Vaya (shop in PA does this).

Ken Herman | November 23rd, 2010

Sorry, I was trying to be brief in my comments.

My main point was to find out about when to expect a response to my support email.

To be more specific, the email had a few questions dealing with S&S couplers - after market.  Such as, can you can you recommend a company to install them, if Salsa has any good/bad experiences with them (I know you don’t sell or install them at all), etc…

And I was going to ask a follow up question about whether it is possible to send the complete bike disassembled, so I don’t have to take it apart when I get it, and re-assemble it when I get the frame back.

Thanks for your quick response (even though I confused you - sorry).

jp | November 23rd, 2010

Thanks Gnat.  You’re right.  I do love Salsa road bikes.  That beautiful Cassie’s coming home with me anyway, even if no crowned fork!

Meanwhile, I’ll continue dreaming about a Pitsola Ti, and about a 2011, new, timelessly classic yet of-our-time steel road bike which, I hope, you’ll make feel like royalty by giving it a crowned, steel fork :)

Gnat | November 23rd, 2010

Yes, it would be great to have a bike like the Vaya or Fargo with S & S couplers.

Ken, as far as a response time, generally speaking we respond in 24 hours or less.  That of course is a general statement and does not include weekend.  Since you are asking this here I’m assuming that did not happen.  I am sorry for that.

Regarding what builders do this.  Our customers may need to chime in here, but I am aware that Bilenky has done work for more than one of our customers.  I’m sure many other frame builders offer this service.

Regarding sending a bike disassembled.  Unfortunately we cannot.  This is a contractual arrangement with the suppliers of components.  Sorry about that.

Ken Herman | November 23rd, 2010

Thanks Gnat.

I’ve heard of Bilenky.  They seem to do a large number of S&S conversions.  I was intending on using them, unless I heard of someone else.

No problem about disassembled - your comment makes sense.  I kind of figured that would be the response.

Now back to waiting until January…

Chen-yu Lu | November 23rd, 2010

Is there Salsa dealer in Taiwan??
The new Spearfish looks great!!

Andrew | November 24th, 2010

QBP bikes can be found at Cowboy Bikes in Tainan and Famous Bikes in Taichung.

Tom | November 24th, 2010

Friends have used Bilenky for S&S couplers, I will probably use them my self.

Mike Andersonian | November 24th, 2010

Can you comment on the ability of the Ala Carte to handle 650B tires?  Thanks!!

Pat | November 24th, 2010

Yes, my Mukluk will be here Wednesday!

CR | November 24th, 2010

After riding the same bikes for years, it was time to try something new.  And now, I’ve taken two rides on my new El Mariachi Complete and it’s awesome.  I know it’s hard to wait, but hang in there.  What I got from Salsa is worth it. The engineering is perfect; paint perfect; ride perfect.  Once I get the itch for a new bike, I know I have a hard time being patient.  In this case, it’s good that Salsa doesn’t rush.  The finished product will be worth making sure production isn’t compromised. Better a thrill later than disappointment sooner.  A new Casseroll is next…

John (aka Wish I Were Riding) | November 27th, 2010

Is there any info about the Selma in ti? Seems like pictures where shown and then nothing…

Justin | November 30th, 2010

I’m feeling guilty for calling the somewhat LBS every week to check on their preorder Mukluks.  Would you have any idea when the Colorado shops might see their pre-orders?

T-Roy | February 21st, 2011

I’ve been following the Fargo for some time now (2011 improvements are amazing), and think its about time I get a frame. My local dealer says you have no more in stock (2011 size Large). You just finished production not too long ago…how can there be no more left? I even put in an order with an online company claiming they had stock; alas they didn’t. Where did they go and will you make more soon? Its in the 70s here and I’d kill for a ride.

Gnat | February 22nd, 2011

T-Roy - Thanks for the comment. I’ll do my best to add some clarity here.

We have been shipping Fargo complete bikes to our stocking dealers and will be producing more throughout the year. While Salsa may not have inventory of bikes in our warehouse right now, this does not mean there are no Fargos (of any size) available for purchase. Many of our stocking dealers have inventory on their sales floor. Salsa recommends finding one of our stocking retailers to purchase.

If you are seeking a frameset - We will have great inventory of Fargo framesets in the next few weeks.

Kato | March 1st, 2011

I’ve had my new 2011 Fargo for about a week now.  Love it!  Can’t wait to do some overnight adventures with it.  This is the bike I’ve dreamed of for a long time.  Nicely done, Salsa!

T-Roy | March 7th, 2011

Just recieved my new 2011 Fargo….well done Salsa. Quick question: (may help others who wish to customize). There are several threaded holes on the frame which may or may not all be the same size/thread-pitch i.e. rear dropout rack mounts, seat stay rack mounts, fender mounts, water bottle cage mounts, fork fender mounts, etc. How can I find out what the size/thread-pitch is for all these holes so I can order the right bolts for my customization? Don’t even know if they are English or Metric. Some holes have bolts in them, but I’d have to have a thread gauge to spec them out. Is there such a thing as plastic bolts that can be used to seal the hole up to prevent water from entering the steel frame?
