Introducing: Cowchipper Handlebar

I’d like to introduce our newest handlebar; the Cowchipper.

As you may have guessed, the Cowchipper combines features found on our long-running favorites, the Cowbell and Woodchipper bars. Each cyclist has their own unique taste in what they prefer in a handlebar, and the new Cowchipper provides another great option.

Think of the Cowchipper as a Cowbell with increased flare OR a Woodchipper with decreased flare and less backsweep. Whether spending long days in the saddle on a tour, or drifting through corners in a gravel race, the Cowchipper is sure to become the bar of choice for many riders tacking on big miles.

The Cowchipper retains the exact same feel of the Cowbell bar (or most modern road bars) on the top and hood positions. The big difference is in the drops; we took a new approach by offering a radical 24 degrees of flare. 

This flare boosts leverage and provides an amazing amount of control and stability while in the drops in aero position. While providing this increase in control, the Cowchipper still retains its ability to provide brake/shifter attachment points typical of most drop bars. 

Clamp diameter is 31.8mm.

Where do you measure your bars? Drops/hood/end/etc?

At the hoods. A standard road bar is usually 42mm. A 44mm bar is what is on the medium sized Fargo, as well as on the small Fargo (I believe).

I’m digging this bar already. The cowbell/road style hooks give me a lot more room for tinkering with hood position without compromising any of my riding positions.  If you have any fit issues with your existing drop bar mountain bike or you want greater comfort and stability from your road/gravel bike, the cowchipper is worth serious consideration.

Could someone official please confirm or deny where the bar width is measured? I’m interested in the width at the hoods, so if it’s measured somewhere else, could you please tell us the difference, in cm. Thanks.

I have both bars in front of me right now.  It’s measured at the hoods, or more accurately, from corner to corner of the flat bar section.

There really should be a width line on the diagram above to show this. Anyhow, that is what it is. 

If I were in error my post would be deleted or corrected. They do mod these posts.

Stephen - The bars are measured at the center of bar at brake/shift lever mounting spot. Center of hoods would be another way to think of it. Hope that helps and thanks for your interest.

Trying to decide between the Cowchipper and Cowbell for my La Cruz - mainly ride it on crushed rock / dirt, plus the occasional pulling of the kids in the Burley. Thoughts?

Is the reach on the Cowchipper really 96 mm?  It doesn’t look that way from the pictures.  That would put it 2 cm further than a Cowbell.

I am also interested in knowing if the reach number is accurate. I was about to pull the trigger on these, but then I noticed that the reach is listed at 96mm. I have a set of Cowbell 3s and they are perfect with their 76mm reach.

@ Erick -  I spotted this in a review of the Cowchipper:

In concert with the flare and sweep, the reach, or the forward extension from the cross bar of the Cowchipper, is only 79.2mm. This means that when you mount brake/shift lever controls, the hoods don’t end up so far away from the saddle of the bike that an abnormally short stem might be required.

Is the width measured from the top of where the shifter hoods would be or from the middle of the shifter body?  I’m trying to figure out if you offer an option that would be narrow enough for me (and other small women).  If I ride a traditional road bar that’s wider than 38cm at the hoods, I get hand numbness, so I’m looking for a bar that’s narrow enough on top for extended riding but offers more leverage in the drops to offset the stability of a shallow head angle.

Also, how do people generally like to size these? My road bars are 40s, and I think my shoulders are in that range also, but I am looking to put these on a Surly DT tourer. Any benefits to going a little wider, or should I stick with my road size?
