New CroMoto S.U.L Steel Stems

Today we proudly re introduce our Salsa CroMoto S.U.L. threadless mountain and road stems.   Here are the details.

- MSRP = $60

- 1 1/8th inch threadless (28.6mm)

- 26.0 bar clamp available in 60, 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120mm lengths in both 90 degree & 105 degree

- 25.4 bar clamp available in 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120mm lenghts in both 90 degree & 100 degree

- All sizes called out above are in stock and already selling at QBP!

Note:  CroMoto S.U.L. quill stems are not in stock yet and still a month or two away

As you can see from the picture the new stems are visually identical to classic CroMoto S.U.L. threadless stems.    So, what is new about the stem?

The biggest change is something you can't see.   We’ve come up with a 2-step heat-treat process to increase strength and fatigue resistance.    The end result is our strongest and most fatigue resistant CroMoto stem ever.   Considering we've been building this stem in some form for over 20 years, that is a strong statement and testament to the new stem.

How do you tell the difference between the new and old?    Good question.

There is a hashmark on the inside of the stem bar clamp.  It is on the welded portion of the bar clamp, not the removable face plate.

Since we are talking about he CroMoto stems, we need to recap and point out a few things.

1)  If you have a CroMoto stem purchased after November 7th, 2007, please click here to go the CroMoto Stem Safety Recall Website to see if you have a stem included in the recall.    Note:  If you just purchased a stem after this date and it has the hashmark shown above, it IS NOT included in the CroMoto Stem Safety Recall.   The markings for new stems will be added to this website shortly.

2)  If you have a Salsa complete bicycle with a painted to match Salsa CroMoto stem, the painted to match stem is included in the recall.    Please go the recall website and follow the procedures to get a credit or new stem.   Since we are unable to supply a painted to match stem as a replacement, many customers have asked for the paint codes so they can get the stem painted on their own.  Here is that information.

- Copper Brown Ala Carte = YS9226

- Casseroll Ginger Beer = YS951

- Casseroll Mustard = YS132C with a pearlized clear coat

- El Mariachi Red = YS9018

- La Cruz Orange = This was a custom color based of PMS 151 with a pearlized clear coat.  I'm sorry we do not have a stock YS paint color

Again, thanks to all of you for your patience and assistance during the last 15 months.   We are proud of the new stem and really happy to have it back in our product line for the years to come.

Can I swap out my Casseroll Mustard (recalled) stem for this new one?  And if so, can I get it in the same color?  I’ve been sitting on the old stem waiting for an announcement like this.

Gnat | April 27th, 2010

Kevin, we will happily replace your mustard recalled stem with a new one.  Unfortunately, it will be black.  By the way, you should stop riding the yellow stem and contact us immediately for a replacement.

Kevin | April 27th, 2010

Bummer about the color, but I’ll take care of it ASAP.  I’ve contacted the 800 number once before and they said the same thing.  I know:  I’m not being a responsible person and just being vein.  But, I didn’t want to slap some ugly bontrager stem on my pretty salsa!  lol.

My LBS doesn’t remember me buying the stem and I don’t have the receipt (nor do I remember if I purchased it in the recall period). How is that handled?

Dan K | April 27th, 2010

Is it possible to get the Salsa sticker for the stem if we get one painted?

Dan R | April 27th, 2010

Any chance a 135mm is on the horizon?

Gnat | April 27th, 2010

Kevin, thanks for understanding.

Bob, if you think it is in the recall period, please contact us.

Dan K, I don’t know the answer but will follow up later

Dan R, No, a 135mm is not on the horizon or in our product plan for this product.

dan | April 27th, 2010

Did I read your post correctly that in the next couple months you will have a CroMoto quill stem (presumably for 1 inch threaded steerers)?

Nate NYC | April 27th, 2010

Gnat,

The recall didn’t formally include the Pistola complete, although I found mine shipped with a Moto Ace item (last season) despite still being spec’d with a CroMoto.

Understandably safety concerns dictated the change in spec, which have since been revised to omit the CroMoto.  My question is, are Salsa and vendors now accepting MotoAce items in exchange for a new replacement CroMoto stem?

In any case, would appreciate the Stone Bridge Gray paint code!

It’s crazy that you guys are ignoring the high rise stem market. You are building the exact bikes that people want to use them on. Sure, it’s a fairly niche market, but nice steel stems are pretty much on the fringe anyway. Why not be the ONLY option for nice high rise stems?

Gnat | April 28th, 2010

Good morning folks.  Thanks for the comments.

Dan - The CroMoto quill stems will be coming back later.  We will make a formal announcement after we have a firm date for delivery.

Nate NYC - You are correct that Pistola bikes were built and spec’d with a Moto Ace stem and were not part of the Safety Recall.  At this time we do not have any kind of exchange or trade in policy.  For your reference the color of the Pistola was a custom mix based on PMS 431 with a pearlized clear coat.

Matt - We are not intionally ignoring the high rise stem market.  Our first need was to get our current product on the market.  We do offer the Moto Ace in a higher rise and later this year we will have something to show in another model.

Nate NYC | April 28th, 2010

Given the Pistola complete spec at time of order did include the CroMoto stem (link, below) I’m sure that fellow Pistola owners would be thrilled if the trade-in or exchange policy would also cover this bike, too!

If a full exhange just isn’t on offer, considerations for a partial upgrade charge would still be welcome!

This is cool—any plans for bringing the quill S.U.L. back? It’s getting harder and harder to find good chromo quills! Keep up the good work.

Oops, didn’t read em all! Thanks!

MG | May 3rd, 2010

I’m really excited that my favorite stem is back… Even though I love the ProMoto Ti SUL for it’s light, sexy appeal, the CroMoto is Salsa to the core.  A timeless classic if there ever was one.

Thanks for not just letting it go away.  I like Matt’s feedback on the high rise options.  Think about how many Surly CrossCheck owners are nodding their heads in approval right now…

Cheers,
MG

Wow, that mark on the stem looks like a giant stress riser!

Gnat | July 23rd, 2010

Hey folks, for those of you on this thread, I just wanted to inform you all that we have finally passed quill stems.  They are in transit from Taiwan and will be here in 5-6 weeks.

We will do a more formal product release posting in the near future.  I just wanted to give those whom asked a heads up.

Mark | August 24th, 2010

any advance info on what angles/extensions will be available in the quill stems?

Phil | August 28th, 2010

What does an 80mm weigh?

Marco W | November 23rd, 2010

Quill stem ETA update?  Can’t find them at any of my favorite Salsa dealers as of 11-23-10.

Looking forward to a couple of 73 deg - 110mm - 26.0’s with 1-inch quills!

Kathse | November 25th, 2010

1-inch quill stems with removable caps are very important!

Mark | November 25th, 2010

I got my 1-inch quill stem over a month ago - your shop should be able to get them

TIM | December 2nd, 2010

Hi mate
where can I buy the ahead stem in Europe? I have not found it somewhere. In germany or Austria would be the best.
Thanks, Tim

Phil | December 23rd, 2010

I’ve looked, but can’t find the 1 inch Salsa quill stem locally or on line. In the near future?

Thank you,

Phil
