Raging Rivers On The North Shore

This past week, my family and I headed up to Minnesota's North Shore for a few days. Now my love for the N.S. is well professed so I thought I'd share a few pics from the weekend.

They have been getting hammered up there with precipitation and it didn't stop till we were leaving on Saturday morning. The rivers and streams were raging. Lots of spontaneous waterfalls were forming everywhere in addition to the large ones on most of the big rivers up there. On Thursday, the drainage ditches along Hwy 61 were pretty much filled and water was threatening to flow across the highway. Lots and lots of erosion happening up there obviously.

These two shots are from the Cascade River.

Around the Beaver Bay/Silver Bay area there was still quite a bit of beautiful fall color, but the Tofte/Lutsen/Grand Marais area has already moved well past prime. Still, there is so much beauty up there it doesn't take much to find it.

This is the Beaver River, raging on Saturday afternoon.

This mossy rock just glowed in the wet forest.

Welcome to the Boreal forest. Lots of lichen on the rocks in these parts.

And crazy, colored fungus.

I love being outside. I prefer to ride on dirt. Or snow. If I was born a hundred years earlier I might have been a polar explorer. There's a great natural world out there to see, smell, taste, listen to, and experience. Life slows down out there and the distractions we've created will disappear if you let them. Give me a backpack and let me go.

Thanks for the tip Tim. I will try to check out his book. I’ve visited Wolf Ridge a couple times when driving by and have often wished I worked there. The section of the Superior Hiking Trail that moves past Wolf Ridge is awesome.

Hey Kid -

The orange stuff you found is also a lichen. There is a book written about lichens of the north woods by Joe Walewski, he is one of the naturalists at Wolf Ridge ELC right by Beaver Bay. I used to work there, sniff, sniff….

Amazing shots Mike… Thanks for sharing those. Looks like you had a great trip, even if some of the color was past its prime.

Down here in Nebraska, we’re just hitting our color peak right now, I’d say. It’s amazing…

Cheers,
MG
