Roadtrippin’ On The Brain

It is late January, and despite the relatively easy winter we've had this year, road trips are on the brain.

Pete pours some money into the money hole on our way to Salida, Colorado last spring...

Heck, yesterday was the first day of the season for us to go below zero. But 20's and 30's aren't really warm. Sure, they are warmer than zero or ten below...but they still mean you aren't wearing shorts and t-shirts, and that your water will freeze if you don't drink it fast enough.

Hence, the need to be elsewhere has kicked in. In the din of background conversation you hear talk of riding this place and that place, with almost a sense of urgency. "Like, I've got to get out of here man!' type talk. Modern day cabin fever? Or perhaps just modern day cyclists, yearing for a bit of warmth, some fresh dirt or pavement, and a good bike.

Where will I go this year? I'm not quite sure yet.

What about you? Got plans to escape? Share them with us here...

I love being outside. I prefer to ride on dirt. Or snow. If I was born a hundred years earlier I might have been a polar explorer. There's a great natural world out there to see, smell, taste, listen to, and experience. Life slows down out there and the distractions we've created will disappear if you let them. Give me a backpack and let me go.

Funny this post came up today.  Just yesterday I was doing the same kind of thinking.  I think a spring trip down to West Virginia for a remote week-long gravel road/jeep road/back road tour is the plan.  This type of thinking and planning along with mountain biking on my Salsa Ti El Mariachi gets me through the winter every year.

I’m heading to CA in two weeks for a little LA-San Diego bike tour. Camping on the beach and lots of sun will be the perfect antidote to NYC winter (even if it has been tremendously mild).

We live just over the hill from Salida (Gunnison).  We have had an incredibly mild winter so far.  Our road trip is coming soon….St. George, Bootleg Canyon, San Diego, Tucson, Sedona????  We will see where the family truckster takes us. It will be dictated by our 2 boys and bikes (Mukluks, Selmas, Spearfishies)

Hah - great theme for the conversation I had with a friend of mine last night…  A bunch of my NorCal buddies are heading to Arizona in mid-february, while I am making the journey to Frostbike in Minnesota!  I guess my warmth will have to come from clothing, but I’m excited to check out the new Salsa offerings and getting to actually ride a Mukluk in the SNOW instead of on dusty, rocky trails!

Salida was amazing, but you know you’re always welcome in Laguna Beach. I’d love to see you guys.
