Salsa & Split Pivot: Media Launch Day One…Behind The Scenes

We thought we'd share a quick "behind the scenes" look at Day One from the Salsa/Split Pivot Media Launch yesterday. 

We've brought nine journalists from Canada, Germany, and the United States up to Duluth, Minnesota to showcase our new bikes...but also to showcase Duluth and the incredible effort that is being put into developing it as a mountain bike destination.

love it!  Horsethief in the summer fatty in the winter.  LIFE IS GOOD!

So, I’m both happy and sad about the 2014 Salsa Horsethief and Spearfish.

I’m happy about the Split Pivot and the G2 offset forks.  I’m digging the paint schemes.

But I’m sad about the price.  The brand new Trek Fuel EX 7 is a thousand dollars less than the low end Horsethief.  Yes, the Horsethief is running nicer shifting gear.  But for the $1000 difference, I could live with Shimano stuff and replace it with SRAM as it wears out.

I want to support Salsa because QBP has done a lot for MN mountain biking and for Cuyuna.  But I’m not a doctor nor a drug runner so I don’t have money to burn.  This is twice now I was going to pull the trigger on a Salsa bike and had to rethink things over cost. (Warbird became a Specialized Secteur Disc.) That is not a good thing.

I realize components and outside forces dictate costs.  But don’t forget that a lot people, including a lot of potential customers of Salsa, aren’t rich and $3300 as a starting price puts them out of reach of a bike made by Salsa.  Your motto is “Adventure by Bike”.  How can working class mountain bikers go on that adventure when the bike costs a seventh (or more) of their yearly salary?
