North Vancouver, Canada

As a bikepacker and cyclist I am always learning. Riding my bike takes me to new places, teaches me new things and introduces me to an incredible community of wonderful people. My passion is to combine my love of creative storytelling, with the physical challenges of exploring new and wondrous environments and cultures.

RJ's Kit

My hope is to continue to tackle new and challenging races on all sort of bikes across all sorts of conditions while balancing ever-growing bike adventures with my family - my wife Sarah and my 17-month old son Oliver.

WHAT IS THE CYCLING ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?
I am most proud of twice completing the Iditarod Trail Invitational 1000. Each race had its own unique challenges and each taught me something new about myself.

WHAT KIND OF A CYCLIST ARE YOU?
I like to think of myself as an explorer and a storyteller.

HOW LONG HAS CYCLING BEEN A PART OF YOUR LIFE? WHEN DID IT BECOME MORE THAN JUST “RIDING A BIKE”?
I have been bikepacking for 8 years.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE BEEN ON A BIKE SO FAR?
This is a difficult question. There is nothing like the lure and the call of the Iditarod Trail but Iceland was spectacular.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO DAYDREAM ABOUT WHERE YOU HAVEN’T YET RIDDEN?
I am excited to ride in Scandinavia and regret having to miss out on my previously planned New Zealand race.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE WHAT THE BICYCLE MEANS TO YOU?
I am driven by my emotion and passion for creativity and exploration and the bike is a conduit and facilitator for that.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE AS A CYCLIST UNFOLDING?
My hope is to continue to tackle new and challenging races on all sort of bikes across all sorts of conditions while balancing ever-growing bike adventures with my family - my wife Sarah and my 17-month old son Oliver.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND YOUR RIDING?
I am now inspired by my son Oliver. He teaches me to slow down and appreciate every nook and cranny.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SALSA BIKE MODEL AND WHY?
My favourite Salsa bike is the Cutthroat. It is simply fun and versatile and has served me well and multiple long-distance events. But I will always have a sweet spot for the Mukluk.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PRE, DURING, AND POST RIDE/RACE FOOD AND BEVERAGES?
Pre-ride, I like to keep things simple. I don’t like to ride on a full belly so usually a quick espresso and a turkey wrap. During my rides, I love a nice mocha, although while racing it is crazy how the body craves a coke and root beer. Gummie Bears have saved my life once or twice, not to mention peanut butter cups I stole from a scratched racers’ drop box in Alaska. I have fueled a lot of miles graving on mixed nuts with various chocolates and sweets thrown in. Post ride, I love a good chocolate milk and a peanut butter and jam sandwich or a Tofino Kelp Stout on a sunny patio.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T CYCLING?
When I am not cycling, I am a filmmaker; writing and directing for commercials and film. But I am also a dad and cherish time with my family and my son Oliver.

WHAT DON’T YOU LEAVE HOME WITHOUT ON A RIDE?
My bike. And an open mind.
